In 2011, the Douglas-led Labour Party Administration for the first time in the history of St. Kitts and Nevis, introduced several concessionary benefits for all nationals who were importing food stuff from family and friends abroad. The Labour Party removed all taxes and duty on a full barrel or 400lbs of food stuff. The Labour Party government also allowed citizens traveling into the country an exemption of all taxes and duties on the first US$200 or EC$540 worth of goods brought into the country. And finally, the Douglas-led government introduced VAT-Free shopping days in December.
In a new term in Government, the Labour Party pledges to increase these concessions as follows:
- Allow duty free imports on two barrels of food stuff, instead of just one barrel; and increase the allowance from 400 lbs of goods up to 1000 lbs.
- Increase the duty free allowance on goods brought in by persons traveling from US$200 up to US$500 per person.
- Make the VAT-Free days truly VAT-Free. That is, VAT will be 0% on all goods on VAT-Free days.
- Apply the VAT exemption on not just the first EC$50,000 but instead on the first EC$65,000.
The Duty-Free Policy was the Labour Party’s Policy in the first place. Labour will do even more for you with its NEXT GENERATION SOLUTIONS for social improvement because IT IS ALL ABOUT YOU, the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
