Basseterre, St Kitts, November 21, 2019 – Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris needs to pay small contractors immediately.
This is the message from Deputy Political Leader of the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) and Parliamentary Representative for St Christopher 2 (Central Basseterre), Hon Marcella Liburd.
“Small contractors in Central Basseterre want me to plead for them to get their pay. They, along with other small contractors from other areas are involved in the Roof Repair Programme. They are questioning ‘why is it that small contractors are being so disrespected’,” Liburd said on Freedom 106.5 FM “Issues” programme on Wednrsday.
Liburd said the small contractors are frustrated because it is now going for six weeks that they have not been paid.
“They said they have been sent to the Treasury. They have been going for several weeks and there is no payment,” said Liburd, who further pointed out that small contractors have bills to pay.
The non-paymemt to small contractors involved in the roofing programme which operates out of the office of Prime Minister Harris has been confirmed by independent sources.
“It is over four and five months that some of us have not been paid. Some of us have been pleading and all we are getting is the run around.”
Other sources have disclosed that scores of other small contractors and suppliers in Sr Kitts and Nevis and overseas who have provided services to the Team Unity Government have not been paid for months.
“Just look at sectors within the government departments where there have been frequent shortages,” said two sources.
