Pollster Don Anderson
Pollster Don Anderson

Don Anderson, a pollster from Jamaica who hadn’t gotten his data accurate during the last general election in Jamaica in which he predicted that the PNP Party was going to win, has gotten it flat wrong. Contrary to his prediction, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) went on to win the 2016 election. Similarly, in St. Lucia for the 2016 election, Anderson predicted that the SLP was going to win the election 11-6 but the actual election results were that the SLP lost the election 6-11. Going on what appears to be the track record of Anderson, his poll results giving the Timothy Harris-led government a positive review, presages a resounding victory for the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.

Kittitian and Nevisians find it quite odd that results of a poll conducted in St. Kitts and Nevis are being published for the first time in a Jamaican newspaper. It would appear that no local newspaper was prepared to take the leap of faith to publish Anderson’s poll results once again. Given that the Team Unity government has developed a reputation for disinformation and cover-up, an outside newspaper was chosen instead to publish and sanitise the results of the Team-Unity poll. It is also important to note that the Jamaica Observer that printed the Anderson poll results is essentially the political mouthpiece a political party in Jamaica, akin to the Democrat Newspaper in St. Kitts and Nevis.

It must be pointed out that the referenced Anderson poll was conducted starting on November 15, 2018. It is quite mysterious that the poll is being reported on almost three (3) months later. It is generally accepted that the validity of the results of political opinion polls tend to expire within a matter of a few weeks, if not days. One wonders why, just as in the case of the Peter Wickham Poll of 2018, which was reported on almost 6 months late, the Team Unity Government and Prime Minister Harris insist on bringing poll results to the people of our Federation many months after. Is this because the poll results are not credible?

One other important insight in relation to the Don Anderson poll is that it purportedly surveyed 869 persons over the period November 15th to December 10th. This is almost one full month. Such a poll cannot be seen to be credible. The results of the poll became invalid before the surveys were all completed. Thus, the poll had been rendered utterly meaningless long before it was completed or, worse yet, published.

Finally, for some strange reason, the actual results of the Anderson poll have not been published. Instead, the public has been given snippets of opinionated commentary without reference to the full range of data on any given statistic. One is hard-pressed to believe that a poll which lasted three and a half weeks and that possibly cost taxpayers in excess of EC$100,000 could have produced so little statistical data.

The Team Unity government clearly has something to hide, and the public must not be fooled. If Prime Minister Harris and his fragile government believe their own pollster’s myth, we challenge the Prime Minister to call the election NOW, and relieve the country of the backwardness, corruption, nepotism and mismanagement at once!
